Children’s Ministry at First Churches

Gleaning a Success! Above are some of the hands that gleaned 300 lbs. of potatoes, beets and carrots for Rachel's Table this past Sunday. Youth from First Churches, Edwards, and St. John’s worked together to harvest food at Brookfield Farm in Amherst. They then transported all that fresh produce down to Kate’s Kitchen in Holyoke. Kate’s Kitchen provides a hot noon time meal 365 days a year to anyone in need. Through their lunch program they also empower, educate, and train un-employed and underemployed individuals interested in the culinary field. I am really proud of our youth and very thankful to Manny Pintado who stepped in at the last moment to help chaperone this event. This trip wouldn’t have been possible without his help. Thanks Manny! First Churches is now part of a joint youth group - [...]

Sunday School News

Scarecrow Potluck Don’t miss our upcoming Scarecrow Making Party. Angie and Kelli will be hosting us this coming Sunday, October 26th at 12:00, for an afternoon of friendship, fun and scarecrow making. Bring some old clothes and a dish to share. They live at 10 Golden Drive in Easthampton. Hope to see you there.     A Chance to Harvest for Others   All of our teens are invited to go on a gleaning expedition with Rachel’s Table this coming Sunday, October 26th, from 12-4. We’ll join with teens from Edward’s, Haydenville U.C.C. and St. John’s to learn more about the Biblical practice of gleaning, harvest food, and deliver it to a donation center. We still need an adult volunteer for this event. And speaking of our joint youth venture… We’ve been awarded a grant of $3,900 by the Episcopal [...]

Sunday School News

Second Hour If you have small children, or even tall ones, that hour after church can be a challenging one. You want to visit and get to know people, maybe even have an adult conversation, but there’s one, maybe two, possibly 3 kids hanging on to your legs making you feel like a human jungle gym. It’s not easy to concentrate or talk like the rational, interesting human being you know you are, under such circumstances. I don’t know if this will completely solve the problem, but I’ll plan to set up a table of quiet activities: puzzles, art, and a big cookie sheet covered in something little ones can push around with trucks. You’ll still need to keep an eye on them, but they may find the activities engrossing enough to free you up to string more than 3 [...]

First Churches Sunday School News

Teacher Needed for October Look at all those kids! Gabe has been doing a great job teaching the 3rd grade and up class, but he’ll be starting a new training for hospital chaplaincy soon. This means we will need someone to take over this class for the month of October. I poked my head in last Sunday and was excited to see that the kids were really engaged with the lesson and with each other. I think this would be a really fun class to teach and I’ll do everything I can to make it as easy as possible for you if you’re interested in helping. I’ll gather all the materials and props for the lesson. All you need to do is spend about 20 minutes looking over the plan ahead of time so you can lead the class. It’s [...]

Gratitude for Gathering Sunday

With 18 children on hand for our first Sunday, I think it’s safe to say that our Sunday School year is off to a great start. Whirl, our new curriculum, is a hit with the kids and as we all get to know one another and develop more of a routine, I think the whole experience will only get better. Many thanks to Angie, Kelli, and Heidi who spread a beautiful table for those who came early to register and for all those who came down for fellowship following the service. What a joy to it was to welcome the whole church down to our freshly painted and re-organized Children’s Wing. And thanks to Gabe, Angie, Lisa, Yin-Yin, Maggie, Karin, Bernadette, and Marion, for volunteering in the classrooms. It takes a lot of help to run a first rate [...]

Want to Get your Kids Excited for Gathering Sunday September 7th?

Give them a preview! Click here to introduce them to some of the wild and crazy characters that make Whirl, our new Sunday School experience, such a delight. We’ll have music and crafts, great talks and a whole lot of fun this first Sunday, as we learn from the story of “Doubting Thomas” about how important it is to ask questions - even in church! Hmmm, maybe doubt isn’t so bad after all….. And a Big Thank You to…  Judy, Manny, George, Lisa, Angie, Gabe, Ernie, Pastor Todd, Vanessa, and everyone else who has worked so hard to prepare the rooms for Sunday School this year. The Children’s Church looks amazing thanks to all the hard work, painting, planning, organizing and cleaning these folks have done. Thanks to Stacy, Dawn, Lisa, Gabe, Barbara, Karin, Sandy, Marion, Yin-Yin, and everyone [...]
