Centering Prayer is a form of meditation with its roots in the ancient tradition of contemplative Christianity. It is a simple practice of surrender and opening to the action of the Spirit within. Fruits of the practice can include a deepening relationship with God, as well as a greater sense of calm and groundedness that we can take with us into our everyday lives.

During the season of Lent, First Churches member Kathryn Argetsinger will be offering an introduction to Centering Prayer as well as to Lectio Divina, a related practice of meditation on the words of Scripture. All are welcome; we sit in chairs and periods of meditation will not exceed twenty minutes.

Two different times will be offered for people to try out these practices: either Tuesday evenings at 7:00 or Wednesday mornings at 10:30. We will meet in the church parlor for about one hour.

Brochures about Centering Prayer will be available after church beginning in February, or you may click here to see a brochure in PDF format. The Lenten groups will also read and discuss together the book Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening by Cynthia Bourgeault, which will be available for purchase.
