What’s that smudge on your forehead?  This year, Rev. Todd Weir, Pastor at First Churches of Northampton will be offering ashes on the front steps of the church for anyone who would like to join us in a Carbon Fast for Lent.  Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Christian observance of Lent, a 40-day time of reflection about God’s love for us and our self-giving love for others.  Many Christians share in the practice of having ashes placed on their foreheads on this day.
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
Why Ashes and Why a Fast?   The ritual of placing ashes on the forehead reminds us of two things -that we are part of the earth, and to stay humble in our relationship to God, others and all the earth.  Traditionally, people give up something for Lent, like desserts or Facebook, to remind themselves that everything is a gift from God.  Recently, many Christians have participated in looking at ways of reducing carbon consumption as a part of this traditional Lenten ritual.  Each day during Lent, we will post an idea for people to consider.  For example, you can save $100 per year and increase your fuel efficiency by 3.3% by keeping your tires properly inflated.  Regular tune-ups increase your efficiency by another 4%.

Join us in reducing your Carbon Footprint, and take a moment each day to look at the earth with gratitude!
